In Loving Memory of Sandy

Sandy
Sandy is a sulcata tortoise also known as an African Spur Thigh Tortoise. We got Sandy in Little Rock in August of '98. She was just a two inch hatchling then. We lost Sandy on Feb. 1st, 2002. She had grown to over a foot and a half in her short 3 1/2 years.
We will miss her.

A young Sandy
Sulcatas are vegetarians and Sandy wouldn't bite you. She could actually move pretty fast contrary to the belief that tortoises are slow.

Sulcatas can live to be 150 years old and weigh over 100 lbs. They do have a personality because Sandy would come out of her house to watch tv with us. She would walk up to you and eat out of your hand if she knew you. Her favorite treats were bananas. Please think twice before you buy one for a pet though. It's a lot of work to take care of Sulcatas because of their size. People tend to forget how cute they were when they bought them when they weigh 50 lbs. Let me tell you, it takes more than just a pooper scooper!
